Wondering why your hard drive says only 50GB left on a 500GB drive? Wonder where and what is taking up all that hard drive space? Well if your trying to clean up hard drive space here is a free and great analyzer that will make the process much easier. It lets you see where all those big files are hiding out. The program is called Space Sniffer, and it gets the job done.
Either Google search for Space Sniffer, or use this link http://www.uderzo.it/main_products/space_sniffer/index.html
If you have any questions or comment ask away.
I’ve always used SpaceMonger for when I need a quick and simple visual view of the data on your hard drives. I admit it’s a little old school, but it does its job very well.
I gave SpaceSniffer a try, but it was a little too flashy and a little more complicated then it needed to be.
This is only my opinion as I’m sure others will enjoy the more flashy look.
Hi Forman,
I’m always happy to get new useful programs to check out, so i tried Spacemonger.
Cons:
1) It is very outdated (last updated 2006) and not supported past XP/2003. BUT it worked fine on Win 7 when i tried it.
2) Also it need to be installed. – not standalone
3) Its retail with a 30 day trial
3) Makes me feel like im 10 years younger (back in the days of win98)
Pros:
1) I like the Statistics tab
2) Easily jump between drives BUT it makes you scan them each time, so a pro/con
3) Makes me feel like im 10 years younger (back in the days of win98)
4) R-click options, including opening the desires folder directly
Why i still like SpaceSniffer:
1) Updated in 2012 – tested on all the current windows based os’s
2) Freeware
3) can load more then 1 drive for viewing at the same time
4) can click for more info/files or go back to less files
5) R-click options, including opening the desires folder directly
So ill keep using SpaceSniffer for now, thanks for sharing the tools you like to use!
Hi Binaryman, the main difference is:
SpaceSniffer is freeware, and is just for mapping out your hard drive space.
Directory Report is retail – and has a “list duplicate file option”
If you don’t need the extra option then SpaceSniffer gets the job done.
Here’s another i was pointed to, haven’t tried it but a system admin i know uses it.
